I keep seeing a lunchtime menu advertised. How does it work and is it good value?

It's a fixed-price lunch, typically on weekdays, with a starter, main, dessert or coffee and a drink. It's usually the best value of the day. Look for places full of locals, and look out for a handwritten board.
