What closes in the afternoon, and what is the siesta really?

Heading over in August. I've heard everything shuts for hours in the afternoon. Is that true?

Smaller shops and some businesses close for a few hours in the afternoon, especially in summer, then reopen in the evening. Big stores, malls and tourist areas stay open. Restaurants serve lunch late and dinner later than in the UK.

Plan errands for the morning. Banks and offices tend to be open only until mid-afternoon.
