Can my landlord let themselves in without asking?

Our landlord keeps a key and turned up unannounced to 'check on the flat'. Is that allowed?

No. A rented home is your home, and the landlord needs your permission to enter, except in a genuine emergency. Say politely that you need notice. If it continues, get advice from a tenants' association or a lawyer.
